Who said you couldn’t have a chocolate shake for breakfast? This delicious, nourishing matcha cacao shake is just what your body needs to wake itself up and begin the day mindfully. I started making this for a post-spin on-the-go breakfast a few months ago and it’s since become a favorite. The flavors of the cacao and matcha are rich without being too sweet or decadent and go wonderfully with the creaminess of the banana. I used hemp protein powder for a natural post-workout boost. Feel free to sub out brown rice protein powder or your favorite Vega powder for a customized smoothie.

You’ve probably seen one or two matcha posts on my Instagram recently ;) It’s an amazing ingredients that is becoming extremely popular in the US after having been a part of traditional Japanese cuisine for centuries. Matcha is an antioxidant-rich green tea powder that is fine enough to add whole to your smoothies, drinks, overnight oats, and even baked dishes. What makes it so potent compared to normal green tea is the fact that it is consumed in its entirety as a powder, rather than as a water that has absorbed some of the separate leaf.That means that your body can start the day packed with a light, but very present jolt of energy and extra bug-fighting power.

Raw cacao might sound strange with green tea powder, but they work so beautifully together. I love using raw cacao powder as opposed to a processed cocoa powder because its flavor and nutrient density are exponentially better. I really love an uber-chocolately shake, so I add two tablespoons of cacao powder into my smoothie, but you can tone it down to 1 tablespoon and still get a fantastic flavor – cacao powder is that potent. It also has, I was surprised to learn, 20 times more antioxidants than blueberries when raw. That’s crazy! Just one more reason that you can and should drink a chocolate shake for great health!

Serves 1

Prep Time: 5 Minutes


1 banana
4 ice cubes
1 cup almond milk
2 tbsp cacao powder
1 tsp matcha powder
Optional: 2 tsp hemp protein powder or brown rice protein powder



So simple – just put all the ingredients into your blender and blend until smooth. Pour it into a mason jar or re-sealable glass bottle and you’re good to go!
