Q&A with Sophie Jaffe: Entrepreneur and Wellness Advocate

Sophie Jaffe is a force of nature. I'm convinced that she has superpowers that extend the hours in the day. The amount of energy, positivity, and drive that she brings to the world is almost unreal. Take a look at her instagram stories, body of work, then try her amazing products and you'll be inspired and motivated to open your mind and try something new. Sophie, a Los Angeles-based health and wellness expert, is the founder of Philosophie, one of my personal favorite brands of superfoods, the co-creator of the IGNTD podcast, a super informative and entertaining Youtuber, Mindbodygreen contributor, and an amazing mother to her (soon to be 3) children. I hope you enjoy this interview with the amazing Sophie!

Q&A

You've built an amazing wellness empire through Philosophie and your own personal brand! What inspired you to start your business?

I started Philosophie and ultimately my wellness journey by simply wishing that I could have an amazing blend of superfoods and proteins together in one, convenient place. I started creating my own blends and giving them to friends and family and making everyone workout and nutrition guides. One day, I was in the sea in Israel with my husband, Adi, and he turned to me and said, “You should really grow what you’re doing and share it with more people, make it a company.” And that’s when it really took off. From there, social media really escalated my career in wellness. I was introduced into a wellness community + network in LA where I decided to not only share my superfood products but my story on living a healthy and BALANCED life.

I'm so amazed by the fact that you have a full-time business, a growing family, a personal brand, and seem to embody healthy living. Do you have any tips for balancing it all and managing your time?

Above all else, do everything from a place of love—which means working out because I actually love the the way my body moves, or eating because I love how food tastes and how it makes me feel. The moment you do something that’s “good for you” without having any passion for it is the moment you lose your glow. So it’s simple—find recipes for nourishing dishes you can’t wait to make, sign up for a workout class that is the highlight of your day, buy or make natural, non-toxic beauty products that smell and feel amazing.

As Philosophie expanded into what it is today, it was easier to delegate and live by a schedule. I often try to work around the kids’ schedule. When they’re at school I take that time to schedule any events, answer emails, take photos and go to meetings. As soon as they’re home I make it family time. While there is no true end to your day when you own a company you can set boundaries. I say “no” to things that don’t match my values or fit in with my schedule. I stay present in everything I do and show up completely. I welcome in any emotion and tune in with my body constantly. When I’m feeling anxious and overwhelmed I slow down and when I’m feeling invigorated and vibrant I act with purpose.

What are your top tips for raising a healthy family and getting your kids excited about healthy eating?

When you’re excited about healthy and nourishing foods your kids will be too! I share everything with Kai and Leo. I cook with them and allow them to experiment with meals (under my watchful eye). I stock the house with a TON of fruits, veggies and delicious nutrient-dense snacks. Some other tips + tricks for keeping your kids healthy and happy include never limiting their diets, but instead offering healthier but equally sweet alternatives (ALL the smoothie bowls their little bodies need), substituting ingredients for healthier options, and doing active activities together such as a hike or a trip to the beach.

Do you have any favorite new food trends or ingredients?

I've been obsessed with making my own homemade nut and seed mylks. They're super simple and are the best bases for all my smoothie bowl creations or lattes. (Recipe: https://www.thephilosophie.com/blogs/philosophie-blog/homemade-mylk-recipe) I also love using Rose Water in baked goods and smoothies.

Who inspires you?

The moon and her cycles inspire me. My husband. My girlfriends who are like sisters. My beautiful boys inspire me daily with their innocence, purity, and deep, deep love.

I also receive inspiration from my environment, which I view as being the people in my life and the moments and experiences I encounter, from the positive to the negative. The Berry Bliss blend, for example, was inspired by my trip to Thailand and falling in love with its exotic fruits, like mangosteen, whereas Cacao Magic was influenced by my mother’s battle with cancer.

What are your intentions for 2018? I'd love to hear what's next for Sophie Jaffe and Philosophie!

To bring in an investor who can also help run the day to day and create systems, to create new products (a beautiful nighttime blend is happening!). On a personal level, bringing baby girl Jaffe into the world in late May or June will be a huge shift and transition for my family and my life. I'm so excited to see how she affects our world!
